An AI agent and a staffed live chat can both help a Shopify customer, but they solve different operating problems. The right choice depends on the questions your store receives, the decisions your team is allowed to make and the hours you can cover. Start by sorting the work. Comparing two chat bubbles without comparing the work behind them will not tell you which one fits your store.
Compare the job, not the label
A product question with a documented answer is different from a complaint requiring judgment. “Does this bag have a laptop pocket?” can be answered from reliable catalog information. “My parcel arrived damaged and I leave tomorrow” may involve evidence, discretion and access to an order. Put those cases in different groups before comparing tools.
Live-chat products can also contain automated features. Shopify Inbox, for example, supports instant answers as part of its chat experience. An automated reply therefore does not, by itself, establish that a tool can have a detailed product-selection conversation. Evaluate the behavior you need rather than assuming that every product in a category works the same way.
Where a product-focused AI agent fits
An agent is a useful candidate when questions repeat but customers express them differently. It can explain a documented feature, compare relevant items and carry a constraint such as budget through a conversation. Product cards and supported cart actions can keep the recommended item close to the answer.
Obsedia’s Ecommerce Agent is built around that storefront work: approved product knowledge, public Shopify product details, brand settings and explicit cart actions. It does not need to invent authority over refunds or protected customer records to be useful. Decide whether those supported tasks represent enough of your inbound work to justify the setup.
Where a person is still the better fit
Human staff can use judgment in situations that are unusual, emotionally charged or commercially sensitive, subject to your policies and permissions. A damaged order, a special accommodation or a wholesale negotiation may require a decision that does not exist in a public product page.
Staff also need tools, information and training. A person cannot answer an undocumented compatibility question merely because the conversation is live. A useful operating model gives both people and the agent reliable information, then reserves discretionary decisions for the team that is authorized to make them.
Compare coverage and waiting honestly
Staffed chat depends on your available team. Shopify Inbox lets merchants set availability and an automated first reply, which helps communicate expectations when a person is not immediately available. An AI agent can answer supported questions outside those staff hours when the storefront and required services are working.
Run the same shopping task during a staffed period and after hours. Check whether the customer receives a useful answer or only an acknowledgment. Also test the route to a person. Obsedia Ecommerce V1 uses email handoff for questions outside its scope; do not present that as an instant live-chat transfer.
Compare costs per useful outcome
For staffed chat, include coverage hours, training, supervision and the time needed for follow-up. For an agent, include software fees, source preparation and answer review. Both can create additional work when an answer is incomplete or a handoff loses context.
Use a small sample of real enquiries and classify the outcome: answered correctly, needed clarification, escalated or unresolved. Then estimate the effort spent on each. A lower cost per response is not a win if the customer must ask again. Do not compare a human handling exceptions with an agent handling only the easiest questions and call the difference a fair benchmark.
Test a combination before replacing your process
Try a product-focused agent on a defined set of buying questions while keeping your established support route available. Give the agent clear boundaries, and tell your team how handoffs will arrive. This is a workflow recommendation; it does not imply a built-in integration between Obsedia and every help desk.
Use five cases for the first review: a product fact, a comparison, an unavailable variant, a missing detail and an existing-order problem. Compare correctness, next-step clarity and the effort required from your team. Choose the arrangement that handles your actual mix of work, rather than treating “AI” or “human” as a universal winner.
Use an AI agent for supported product conversations and keep a clear route to people for judgment and exceptions. Test both against the same customer tasks.
